More Info I’ve recevied some more info about a possible replacement of the 50D/5D Mark II. The source says a new xD camera is imminent. The DSLR lineup from Canon will be as follows. 1000D / XS 500D / T1i 550D / T2i 7D 5D Mark II 3D (?) 1D Mark IV 1Ds Mark III There could be some truth to this, if the price of the 7D is cut like the 5D Mark II’s has been. cr |

An evolving prime lineup. Received a very cryptic email this AM about some upcoming lens upgrades. The following 3 lenses were mentioned. 50 f/1.2L II Improved AF performance and new coatings. Optical elements to remain the same. 85 f/1.2L III Improved AF speed and new coatings. Optical elements to remain the same. 135 f/2L IS Image stabilization added, as well as the new coatings. Optical elements to remain the same. Probability? I’m not sure, I’ve received snippets of info about the 85 and 135 getting upgraded. If all they’re doing with the 50 and 85 is adding new electronics and coatings to the lenses, it’s quite possible they’ll get an upgrade. Adding IS to the 135L makes some sense. I’m still surprised I haven’t heard anything about a 35L upgrade. CR1 this one with a smaller grain of salt than you’d think. 680EX? The 580EX II will remain in the lineup. Direct email quote. An all new Top-Line Master Controller Flashgun tentatively named 680ex will be launched offering: - Master/Slave
- GN 68 @ 105mm
- Separate Master/Slave switch previously found on 580EX
- Zone Control
- Better switches and improved Screen and Menu
- Fully Weathersealed
- Scheduled Launch Date: July-Dec 2010
- New Generation of Flashguns to be compatible with 40D onwards with Generation 2 Menu Interface.

Updated As reported a couple days ago, a new 5D Mark II firmware has been released. Firmware Changes This firmware update (Version 2.0.7) incorporates the following improvements and fixes. - Fixes a phenomenon in which the aperture exhibits abnormal movement when shooting movies in manual exposure mode and Aperture Priority AE (Av mode) using some Canon lenses (such as macro lenses).
- Fixes a phenomenon in which the exposure level shown in the LCD panel differs from what is shown in the viewfinder when shooting still images in manual exposure mode.
- Fixes a phenomenon in which the Wireless File Transmitter (WFT-E4 or WFT-E4 II) may not automatically power off when used for FTP transfers.
- These phenomenon only occur with the Version 2.0.4 and Version 2.0.3 firmware.
The Version 2.0.7 firmware being released this time is for cameras with firmware up to Version 2.0.4. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 2.0.7, it is not necessary to update the firmware. Download: http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/firm-e/eos5dmk2/firmware.html cr |

5D Mark III in 2011 Vincent Laforet on a recent webcast alluded to the next incarnation of the 5D coming “next year”. He also mentioned Canon is committed to improving the mini HDMI connector on the cameras. It’s rare to hear any of the sponsored photographers mention future products. New Flash A brief comment I received said Canon is readying to replace the 580EX II with a new unit. This will not be an addition to the flash lineup. There will be some new technology built into the flash as well. PowerShot SX20 Replacement The SX20 replacement will take a bit of a departure from the SX10 & SX20. Expect a new lens setup, design and image sensor technololgy. The source also says expect the SX20 to be the last superzoom from Canon that uses AA batteries. I know that will NOT be music to the ears of a lot of people. It seems to be a 50/50 split for LiIon vs AA with the camera line. New Waterproof Camera Expect a new waterproof camera to be announced with the 60D in the coming month. I’ve also been told there could be a waterproof camcorder. CR |
